On the August long weekend I attended our Johnsrud cousins reunion in Sioux Lookout, NW Ontario. I drove the 2000+ km and camped along the way and visited Steve & Shirley Wiebe in Wynyard, Sask. and Julie & Merv Kraynick near Canora, Sask. enroute. It was wonderful to see everyone. My sister Ingrid and brother-in-law Stuart’s house in Sioux Lookout was the locale for the get together that we have been holding every five years since 1991. We all had a wonderful time. Where did the name Johnsrud come from? You have to read my book Ruthie’s Trails to find out that hstory. There were seven out of nine Oltmann siblings together, the three Lee cousins and their spouses, and a few nieces and nephews.
I was gone for 2+ weeks as I did a little sightseeing along the way and kept away from Hwy. #1 as much as possible. Most little towns on the prairies have small campgrounds that are a lot cheaper than the provincial parks. I like to give those small towns my money when I buy gas and cooler ice, etc. and I learn a lot about the areas. Check out the Weyburn, Sask. information centre that has a museum and spectacular silver collection that will blow your mind. Estewan, Sask. also has a very nice museum as part of their information centre. It was a surprise to find a little village called Beulah (my mother’s name) in Manitoba. I ate my lunch at their nice, little picnic site.
