Losing Old Friends

Why is it we are so happy at this time of year as we celebrate Christmas and yet sometimes friends and relatives leave us at the same time? The complexities of life I guess.

First Gord McLennan (82) died on December 2nd in Calgary. Jean, his wife, is a long time friend and former employee. We had picniked together along with their daugher Coleen in the Elbow Valley many years ago.

Then Aunt Jean MacKenzie (87) died on December 6th in Brantford, Ontario. She will be missed by so many people. Uncle Allan always said she could feed the county with her garden on the MacKenzie farm.

Then sister-in-law and friend Irene Oltmann (75) died on December 8th in Brockville, Ontario. Irene and I were friends long before she met my brother Dave. (I sang at their wedding in 1968) She was also a roommate to my two youngest sisters Ingrid and Nora Lea when they were all living in Toronto.

And there is another sister-in-law Lilianne Oltmann (?) who is a walking miracle. Weeks ago she was expected to die in “two or three days” and yet she is still around attending Bible studies, prayer meetings and church. Sometimes life is tough for this cancer survivor, but I am grateful she is still with us. Something to be happy about.

Later Note: On December 18th Lilianne died and went to be with Jesus. At last her suffering is over.

These photos show Uncle Allan (died 2003), Aunt Jean and Irene on the MacKenzie farm south of Ottawa a very long time ago, and the other is of Irene and I in Toronto in the early 1960s.
